Asked on October 7, 2026
Patient's Query
Since yesterday it burns when I pee and I feel like I have to go every 20 minutes even though only a little comes out. No fever. I'm trying to drink more water. Is this an infection and will I need antibiotics?

Quick Answer
Burning when you pee and needing to go often are classic signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Drink plenty of water and see a doctor for a simple urine test, because most UTIs need a short course of antibiotics. Get help the same day if you develop a fever or pain in your back.
Detailed Answer
Burning when you urinate, along with needing to go often, are classic signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially in women. Not drinking enough water, holding urine for a long time and sex can make these infections more likely.
Drink plenty of water, do not hold your urine, and avoid coffee and alcohol until you feel better. Most UTIs need a short course of antibiotics, so see a doctor for a simple urine test rather than waiting. Get help the same day if you develop fever, chills, pain in your back or side, vomiting, or blood in your urine, as these can mean the infection has reached the kidneys. If infections keep coming back, a urologist can look for the cause.
