Irregular Periods 25 To 45 Days Apart For Six Months, Is That Normal?

Patient's Query

My cycle has been all over the place for the last six months. One month my period comes after 25 days, the next after 45. Pregnancy tests are always negative. I've also put on around 5 kg this year without really changing what I eat. Should I be worried about this?

Quick Answer

Cycles that vary between 25 and 45 days can be caused by stress, weight changes, thyroid problems or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Because this has lasted six months and you have gained weight, a gynecologist can check your hormones with simple blood tests and sometimes an ultrasound.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Cycles that change from month to month are common and are often linked to stress, weight changes, intense exercise, poor sleep or thyroid problems. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is another common cause, especially when irregular periods come with weight gain, acne or extra hair growth.

Keep a simple diary of your period dates for the next three months, aim for regular meals and daily activity, and try to manage stress. Because this has gone on for six months and you have gained weight, it is a good idea to see a gynecologist. Simple blood tests and sometimes an ultrasound can find the cause, and most causes are very treatable. Go sooner if you have very heavy bleeding, severe pain or no period for more than three months.
