How Long Does A Lower Back Strain Take To Heal After Lifting?

Patient's Query

Last week I helped my brother move furniture and since then I get a sharp pain in my lower back every time I bend forward to pick something up. It doesn't go down my legs. I've been taking it easy but it's not much better yet. What can I do at home to speed this up?

Symptoms for
Less than a week

Quick Answer

Most lower back strains from lifting heal within two to six weeks. Keep gently active instead of resting in bed, use a warm pack for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day, and bend at the knees when you lift. See a doctor if it is not improving after four weeks.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Sharp lower back pain that starts after lifting or moving heavy things is most often a muscle or ligament strain. It usually gets better on its own within two to six weeks.

Keep moving gently instead of staying in bed, use a warm pack for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day, and bend your knees instead of your back when you pick things up. Gentle stretches and short walks help the muscles heal. See an orthopedic doctor if the pain is not better after four weeks or keeps coming back. Get urgent help if you notice numbness in your legs or groin, weakness in your legs, trouble controlling your bladder or bowels, or fever with the back pain.
