Is It Normal To Catch A Cold Every Month?
Asked on September 22, 2026
Patient's Query
I seem to get a cold every 3 or 4 weeks. Runny nose and sore throat for a few days, it clears up, and a few weeks later it's back again. I work in a busy open office and honestly I only sleep around 5 hours a night because of work. Is my immune system weak or is this normal?
Quick Answer
Adults usually catch two to four colds a year, and more in busy shared spaces. Sleeping only five hours a night weakens the body's defence against viruses, so better sleep, regular handwashing and staying active are the first steps. Frequent high fevers or chest infections need a doctor's check.
Detailed Answer
Most adults catch two to four colds a year, and more if they spend a lot of time around other people. Short sleep is one of the biggest reasons the body struggles to fight off viruses, so five hours a night may be playing a big part. Stress, smoking, low vitamin D and not washing your hands often can also make colds more frequent.
Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep, wash your hands before eating and after touching shared surfaces, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and stay active. If you get high fevers, colds that last longer than ten days, frequent chest infections, or you lose weight without trying, book a visit with a family medicine specialist for a check-up and simple blood tests.
