Patient's Query

I've put on about 6 kg in a year even though I eat the same as always. My hair is coming out in the shower much more than before, and I feel cold when everyone else is fine. I'm tired all the time too. My mother has a thyroid problem. Could it be my thyroid?

Quick Answer

Weight gain, hair loss, feeling cold and constant tiredness together can be signs of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), especially when it runs in the family. A blood test for TSH and T4 confirms it. It is usually treated well with a daily tablet, and symptoms often improve within a few months.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Yes, these symptoms together can point to an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). When the thyroid makes too little hormone, the body slows down, which can cause weight gain, tiredness, feeling cold, dry skin, constipation and hair loss. Low iron, low vitamin D, poor sleep and stress can cause similar symptoms, so a blood test is the only way to know. Thyroid problems often run in families, so your mother's history makes it even more worth checking.

Ask for a blood test that checks TSH and T4 (thyroid hormones), along with your iron and vitamin D levels. If the thyroid is underactive, it is usually treated very well with a daily tablet, and weight and hair often improve over a few months. An endocrinologist can confirm the diagnosis and set the right treatment for you.
