Patient's Query

My son is 2 and he's had a fever since yesterday, it was 38.6 this morning. He doesn't want any food at all but he's still drinking milk and water and playing a little bit. I'm a first time mom and honestly a bit scared. What should I do at home and when do I need to take him in?

Symptoms for
Less than a week

Quick Answer

Fever in toddlers is usually caused by a viral infection and often settles within two to three days. Eating less is normal while he is unwell, as long as he keeps drinking and stays alert. Offer small drinks often, keep him lightly dressed, and see a doctor if the fever lasts more than three days.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Fever in young children is most often caused by a viral infection and usually settles within two to three days. It is normal for a child with a fever to eat less. What matters most is that he keeps drinking and stays alert, which sounds like what is happening now.

Offer small drinks often, dress him in light clothes and let him rest. If you give a children's fever medicine, use the dose on the label for his weight or the dose your doctor gave you. See a pediatric doctor if the fever lasts more than three days or he has fewer wet diapers. Get medical help right away if he is unusually sleepy or hard to wake, has trouble breathing, has a rash that does not fade when pressed, or has a seizure.
