Patient's Query

For about two months my fingers are stiff and a little swollen when I wake up. It takes nearly an hour before I can make a proper fist. It's both hands, the same fingers on each side. I'm 47 and I work as a cashier. Should I be worried about arthritis?

Symptoms for
1 to 6 months

Quick Answer

Morning stiffness in the same fingers on both hands that lasts close to an hour can be a sign of inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Please see a rheumatologist soon. Blood tests and scans can confirm the cause, and starting treatment early protects the joints from long-term damage.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Morning stiffness that lasts longer than 30 minutes and affects the same joints on both hands can be a sign of inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis also causes stiffness, but it usually eases within a few minutes of moving. Thyroid problems and fluid retention can make the hands feel puffy too.

Gentle hand exercises in warm water in the morning can ease the stiffness. Because this has lasted two months and affects both hands, please see a rheumatologist soon. Blood tests and sometimes X-rays or an ultrasound can find the cause. Starting the right treatment early is important in inflammatory arthritis, because it helps protect the joints from long-term damage.
