Patient's Query

A year ago I could walk up to my 2nd floor office without thinking about it. Now I'm puffing by the top. I smoked for 20 years and quit 2 years ago. I also cough a bit in the mornings, sometimes with a little white phlegm. Is this just my age? I'm 50.

Quick Answer

New breathlessness on stairs with a morning cough after 20 years of smoking should be checked for COPD or asthma. A pulmonologist can confirm the cause with a simple breathing test called spirometry. Quitting was the best step you could take, and early treatment and regular walking help keep the lungs working well.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Some breathlessness on stairs can come from being less fit, but a clear change over the past year is worth checking, especially after 20 years of smoking. A morning cough together with breathlessness can be an early sign of COPD (long-term lung damage from smoking) or asthma. Extra weight, low iron and heart problems can also make you breathless.

Quitting smoking was the best step you could take. Stay active with daily walks and build up slowly. Please book a visit with a pulmonologist, who can do a simple breathing test called spirometry and a chest X-ray if needed. Get urgent help if you feel short of breath at rest, have chest pain, cough up blood, or your lips turn blue.
