Patient's Query

I'm a student and I'm on my laptop or phone maybe 10 hours a day. By the evening my eyes are dry and burning, and sometimes my vision goes a bit blurry. After I sleep it's fine again. Am I damaging my eyes? What can I do?

Quick Answer

Dry, burning eyes after long screen time is digital eye strain. We blink much less when looking at screens, so the surface of the eye dries out. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, blink fully, make text bigger and use preservative-free lubricating drops. It does not damage your eyes, but an eye test is worthwhile.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

This is very common and is often called digital eye strain. When we look at screens we blink much less, so the surface of the eye dries out. Screen glare, small text and air conditioning make it worse.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds. Remind yourself to blink fully, make the text bigger, keep the screen at arm's length and a little below eye level, and lower the brightness at night. Preservative-free lubricating eye drops can help too. See an ophthalmologist if your eyes stay red, painful or blurry, or if you think you might need glasses, as an uncorrected vision problem can make the strain worse.
