Patient's Query

By the evening my feet and ankles are puffy and my socks leave deep lines. In the morning it's mostly gone. I'm 58 and I take amlodipine for high blood pressure, started about 4 months ago. My wife keeps telling me to get it checked. What could be causing this?

Quick Answer

Ankle swelling that builds during the day and goes down overnight is often fluid from sitting or standing, and amlodipine, your blood pressure tablet, is a well-known cause. Raise your legs, cut down on salt, and ask your doctor about your medicine. Do not stop taking it on your own.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Swelling that builds up during the day and goes down overnight is often caused by fluid collecting in the legs from standing or sitting for long periods. Amlodipine, the blood pressure medicine you take, is well known for causing ankle swelling, especially in the first months, and too much salt can make it worse. Less often, swelling is a sign that the kidneys, heart or liver need checking.

Raise your legs when you sit, walk regularly, cut down on salty foods, and ask your doctor whether your blood pressure medicine could be the cause. Do not stop any medicine on your own. Because you have high blood pressure, a nephrologist can check your kidney function with simple blood and urine tests. Get urgent help if one leg suddenly becomes swollen, red and painful, or if you feel short of breath.
