Itchy Red Patches On Both Arms That Get Worse After Hot Showers, Is It Eczema?

Patient's Query

About a month ago I noticed itchy red patches on both arms. They get worse after a hot shower or when I sweat at the gym, and the skin there feels dry and a bit rough. We switched to a new washing powder around the same time, not sure if that's related. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

Symptoms for
1 to 4 weeks

Quick Answer

Dry, itchy red patches that flare after hot showers and sweating are most often eczema or a skin reaction to a new washing powder. Switch back to your old detergent, use lukewarm water and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturizer twice a day. See a dermatologist if the patches spread or do not improve.

Detailed Answer

Answered by Medical Doctors Team

Itchy, dry, red patches that get worse with hot water and sweat are often caused by eczema (dermatitis). They can also be a reaction to a new soap, washing powder or fabric. Less often, patches like these are caused by a fungal infection or psoriasis, which need different treatment.

Use lukewarm water instead of hot, keep showers short, and put on a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer right after you dry off. Switch to a gentle, unscented soap and try not to scratch. If the patches do not improve in two weeks, are spreading, have a ring shape, are oozing or very painful, see a dermatologist so they can look at the skin and suggest the right cream.
